NATIONAL NEWS
  • New panel to monitor mid day meal scheme
    • The Human Resource Development Ministry announced that a new committee would be set up to review the implementation of its flagship mid-day meal scheme with a view to monitoring the quality of food and ensuring hygiene standards.
    • This will be in addition to the existing panel that meets twice a year to review the implementation of the programme and gives its feedback to the States.
    • The new committee, likely to be headed by Union Human Resource Development Minister M.M. Pallam Raju himself, will have 20 members and have representation from civil society organisations, officers from related Ministries and other stakeholders. It will meet every three months.
    • It will also look into the effectiveness of the food supply chain and kitchen hygiene standards
INTERNATIONAL NEWS
  • Iberian lynx back from the brink
    • Ten years ago the Iberian lynx was nearing extinction but today, thanks to an imaginative conservation programme that has brought hunters, farmers and the tourist industry under its wing, its numbers have tripled from 94 to 312.
    • The project, jointly funded by the Andalusian government and the European Union (EU), has been singled out for the second time by the EU as an exemplary conservation programme. Brussels is funding 40 per cent of the €26 million needed to extend the project into the neighbouring regions of Extremadura, Castile-La Mancha and Murcia, as well as Portugal.
