NATIONAL NEWS
  • The UIDAI unveils three online authentication services
    • Further strengthening its vision of “empowering residents of India with a unique identity and a digital platform to authenticate [it] anytime, anywhere,” the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) on Friday launched three new Aadhaar-enabled services and announced the establishment of around 300 permanent enrolment centres
    • The services launched are authentication services that use iris, One Time Pin (OTP) and e-KYC (Electronic-Know Your Customer) technologies.
    • The iris-based authentication service enables Aadhaar number holders to identify himself/herself using their iris images. India is the first country to offer such a platform that can be used by nearly 350 million people who hold Aadhaar numbers
    • The OTP service enables Aadhaar-based authentication of all those who had registered a mobile telephone number during enrolment, using their phone anytime, anywhere on a self -service mode.
    • The e-KYC service will allow individuals to authorise service providers to receive an electronic copy of their proof of identity and address. It can be used by various agencies to verify a person’s identity and address.
  • Trai clamps down on pesky telemarketers
    • Amid the growing menace of unsolicited calls and SMSes, telecom regulator TRAI on Friday declared that the services of subscribers who illegally carried on telemarketing activities would be disconnected with immediate effect.
    • In case of a valid unsolicited commercial communication complaint, the originating access-provider shall disconnect all telecom resources allotted to [and blacklist] such subscribers, after due investigation
  • Centre notifies scheme for the implementation of the cauvery award
    • In a major step towards implementation of the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT), 2007, the Union government has notified Cauvery Water (Implementation of the Order of 2007) Scheme, 2013.
    • Under the scheme, the Ministry of Water Resources notified the formation of a supervisory committee headed by the Water Resources Secretary, with Chief Secretaries of the Cauvery basin States/Union Territory (Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Puducherry and Kerala) as members. The Central Water Commission (CWC) chairman shall also be a member, while the CWC’s chief engineer will be the Member-Secretary.
    • The scheme — notified as a “purely temporary measure” — will be in place until the Cauvery Management Board, as envisaged in the award, is constituted.
    • As per the notification of the final award in February, the Cauvery River Authority (CRA), headed by the Prime Minister, and the Cauvery Monitoring Committee (CMC), chaired by the Water Resources Secretary, no longer exist.
  • Ansari for road rail link to the central asian nations
    • Vice-President Hamid Ansari has underlined the need for establishing a road and rail connectivity between India and Central Asian countries and said only such connectivity could bring India closer to Central Asia.
INTERNATIONAL NEWS
  • Rapid retreat of glaciers changing the landscape around everest
    • A study by a team led by a Nepali scientist at the University of Milan has found that glaciers on or around Mount Everest have shrunk by 13 per cent in the last 50 years with the snow line 180 metres higher than it was 50 years ago.
    • The glaciers are in retreat but rates are different,” he said. “It is quite rapid in the east Himalaya but in the west some are advancing while others are in retreat.”
    • The impact of climate change on the Himalayas will have consequences across South Asia and beyond. Rivers such as the Indus, Ganges and Brahmaputra depend to some extent on seasonal glacier melt. Countries across the region are already suffering acute water shortages.
