HEADLINES

NATIONAL NEWS
  • Rs. 1000 crore HUDCO loan to the Godavari project
    • The Godavari project aims at drawing 172 mgd of water from Yellampaly barrage.
    • With the HUDCO loan coming in the project is supposed to gain momentum
    • A tripartite agreement between the Andhra pradesh state government, the water board and HUDCO will be signed on the project
  • Prime minister has said that a critical look at the RTI must be done, but there would be no dilution
  • India's longest tunnel
    • The 11 Km long tunnel connecting Banhilal town with Quazigund in South Kashmir, the longest tunnel in India, was opened to the public.
  • India needs a domestic solution to its hardware problem
    • The country remains heavily dependent on imports for much of the hardware. If things proceed at this level India will have to import $300 billion worth of hardware by 2020.
    • Government should step in to support the establishment of incubators in the electronic clusters in the country.
    • Sourcing from Indian companies by the government for its procurements could also be a strategic step in the direction of encouraging more small companies in the country, which in turn will help in reducing the imports.
  • PIL filed against nuclear liability bill
    • A PIL has been filed in the supreme court challenging the constitutional validity of the civil liability for nuclear damage act 2010 , that idemnifies nuclear manufactures/suppliers and caps the financial liability of the operators.
  • Rural and urban health missions may be merged in the 13th five year plan.
    • The centre proposed to merge the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) and National Urban Health Mission (NUHM) in the 13th five year plan. But they will remain together in the 12th plan.
  • India – Myanmar agree to resolve border issues.
    • Both sides agreed to examine the feasibility of establishing railway links, accelarate work on two hydel projects in Myanmar, and to review progress on a route in to the north east which would supplement India's sole route to that part of the country via tha Siliguru corridor (Chicken's neck)
    • Survey wings of both the sides will jointly work out a schedule for refurbishing and reparing boundary pillars in a time bound manner.
    • More cultural exchange programmes with the border states of Arunachal, Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland.
    • A road from India to Thailand Via Myanmar was also talked upon.
INTERNATIONAL NEWS
  • China backs Nalanda project
    • China has already announced it would donate $1 mn for the project
    • This project is one of the key proposals of the East Asian Summit (EAS)
  • Harvard, Yale unlikely to set up campus in India.
    • More investment in vocational education in India.

    • The one day India- United states summit which culminated today will be followed by US under secretary Ann stock leading another academic delegation, followed by another summit next year.
    • The $10 million which the universities opening here are supposed to pay can be made flexible in case the institutions aimed to impart skill to India's growing workforce
