NATIONAL NEWS
  • India has seen the longest polio free period.
    • Even though India is yet to be announced as a polio free county by the World Health Orgranisation, it is enjoying the longest polio free period. India has not seen a polio case for the last 220 days.
  • Child labour act requires more teeth
    • Nearly 20 years of campaigning against the child labour has only driven the practise underground (ie) The children in some villages near sivakasi are working from home.
    • The factory owners cannot be blamed for this and the blame rests on the sub contractors.
    • The powder causes nose bleeds, stomach pain, TB, and some hormonal problems for girls as well.
  • Manmohan says the most burning issues of global concern will be on the IBSA table
    • Prime minister Manmohan singh is attending the IBSA conference in South Africa. He will also have bilateral talks with the SA president Jacob Zuma and the Brazilian President Dilma Rousef
    • The meeting will mainly concentrate on
        • Global – political and social aspects of globalization
        • South – South cooperation
        • Intra ISBA trade
  • Another important issue is to develop a largely common approach at meetings of Conference of parties under the UNFCC
  • Japan Exempts India from ODA cuts
    • Japan has confirmed the India will be exempted from the Overseas Development Assistance cuts which was enforced on other countries.
    • India the highest receiver of Japanese ODA will thus maintain pole position.
    • It means that despite the financial crises in europe and Japans own internal problems, the multi billion dollar Mumbai – Delhi corridor will remain on course.
    • Officials are planning an India – US – Japan trilateral to focus on the maritime security issues in the south china sea.
  • Minimum wages likely for NREGA workers
    • The centre is likely to pay minimum wages to workers under the MGNREGA scheme.
    • This is in compliance with the latest high court ruling that the Minimum wages should prevail over the MGNREGA wages.
    • Earlier the PM has turned down the proposal of the NAC by linking NREGA wages to the CPI (Consumer Price Index) and delinking it with the minimum wages.
    • The union minister of rural development also stressed on the minimum wages for the farm workers as notified by the states.
    • He also said the wages would be revised annualy indexed to inflation and a full revision would be effected every five years in consultation with the states.
  • The United States gravitational wave detection experiment looking at India as a possible sight
    • The Laser Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory (LIGO) has identified India as a potential site for locating its third inferometer.
    • The GW research in India is coordinated by the Indian Initiative for Gravitational wave Observations (INDIGO).
