NATIONAL NEWS

  • Final hearing of the Cauvery water dispute between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka posted for February
    • The Supreme Court has posted the first week of February 2012 for the final disposal of the petition filed by Karnataka challenging the 2007 award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal which had awarded the water between Karnataka, Tamilnadu, Kerala and Puducherry;
    • This matter was before the tribunal for more than 16 years and now is before the Supreme Court.
  • Law Minister, Khurshid announces that constitutional amendments for Lokpal bill will take the same timing
  • Special Forces conduct exercises at Andaman and Nicobar islands
    • Special forces of all three armed forces in India conducted exercises at the islands in secret;
    • The importance of the islands have increased with Chinese listening posts in Coco Islands of Myanmar;
    • India is planning to strengthen the security for all 572 islands in the Bay of Bengal.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

  • Prepare credible recovery plan, India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) tell Europe
    • The 5th Summit of the IBSA took place in Pretoria, South Africa and the leaders came up with their most comprehensive declaration so far, spelling out its stand on major issues troubling the world and asking the west to meet its commitments towards the world;
    • They also sought fairness in the way the World Bank and IMF works in light of the fact that the west had pushed their French candidate, Christine Lagrande for the top IMF post.

ECONOMY & BUSINESS NEWS

  • 11th plan infra investment target may fall short by 5%
    • The global downturn could lead to a shortfall of 5% of the investment targets for the infrastructure sector during the 11th five year plan which terminates on March 31, 2012. The Govt had initially targeted investments worth 20 lakh crore (i.e. 9% of the GDP) during this plan period;
    • While telecom, airports, gas pipeline have managed to attract more than the target, storage, ports and railways have done very badly in terms of meeting targets. Gas pipelines actually had over a 600% increase from the original projections and it is the one that buoys the rest of the sector.
  • Consumer Price Index up from 111.7 in August to 113.1 in September on account of increasing clothing prices
