  • India concerned over US spy programme reports
    • India on Tuesday voiced its concern at and surprise over reports that it was the fifth most tracked country by the American intelligence apparatus, which reportedly used a secret data-mining programme to monitor worldwide Internet data.

  • cashless treatment for road victims
    • The first project of cashless treatment for those injured in road accidents will be launched on the Delhi-Gurgaon-Jaipur national highway
    • The objective is to get medical help within six to seven minutes of an accident and reach medical care in the golden hour for which 10 ambulances will be stationed at vantage points. Treatment will be provided for at least two days at the 51 notified hospitals. The government will bear the cost for a maximum of Rs. 30,000 per victim at Central Government Health Scheme rates.
  • India to import 20 MT of LNG
    • Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Veerappa Moily said various state-run companies in the oil and gas sectors had initiated talks with international players to buy as much as 20 million tonnes (mt) a year of LNG
    • India has now become fifth largest importer of LNG after Japan, South Korea, the U.K. and Spain, and accounts for 5.5 per cent of the total trade.
    • With LNG demand expected to grow at 5-6 per cent a year till 2020 and 2-3 per cent thereafter, India, along with other Asian counterparts, is driving this growth
    • A lot of capacity was being created in India and LNG re-gasification capacity was expected to be more than 50 mt annually by 2016-17 with a supply of 198 million standard cubic metres per day
    • The nation at present has three operational LNG import facilities — 10 million tonne terminal at Dahej and 3.6 million tonne plant at Hazira in Gujarat and 5 million tonne terminal at Dabhol in Maharashtra. A 5 mt capacity terminal is to be commissioned in Kochi in Kerala this year.
INTERNATIONAL NEWS
  • A step towards space station for China
    • China launched its fifth manned space mission with three astronauts, including its second female astronaut, to carry out experiments in space over 15 days.
    • The spacecraft will dock with the Tiangong space laboratory module — the second manned docking mission after Shenzhou-9
    • This mission will be the longest yet for the country’s rapidly advancing space programme, and is seen as a crucial step in plans to build a space station by 2020. China’s space programme is seen as behind only the U.S. and Russia in its feats.
