- India US will seek to narrow down differences
- In their 46th but most awaited bilateral dialogue this year, India and the U.S. will seek to narrow down their divergences on a host of issues ranging from civil nuclear, immigration reform and trade to Afghanistan besides taking stock of progress made by their 30 Plus dialogue mechanisms

- Fishermen’s organisations and boat owners in Kerala are wringing their hands over Sri Lankan government’s recent decision to let more than a dozen Chinese fishing vessels to operate under the island country’s flag under an arrangement called ‘distant water fishing
- The arrangement lets a country’s fishing fleet to scoop up marine wealth from another country’s exclusive economic zone for money.
- Indians to pay 3000 euro cash bond deposits for UK visa
- India has been put on a list of “high-risk” Asian and African countries whose citizens would be required to deposit £3,000 cash bond when they apply for a British visa.

- Gujarat university first in the country to foray in to geo thermal energy sector
- The Centre of Excellence for Geothermal Energy (CEGE) at the Gujarat-based Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU), an industry-government initiative to create a talent pool for the energy field, has completed pre-feasibility studies in geothermal energy, becoming the only university in the country to foray into this renewable energy sector with State funds.
- In common parlance, geothermal energy is generated and stored in the Earth and the technology is about tapping this heat to produce electricity.
- According to the International Geothermal Association (IGA), as much as 10,715 MW of geothermal power is online in 24 countries and the projection is that this would reach some 18,500 MW by 2015.
- More farmers and fishermen to tap information on monsoon and markets in mobiles
- The M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) has launched the second phase of its successful IT-driven rural empowerment initiative to help more farmers and fishermen in Nagapattinam and Karaikal districts
- Ever since it was rolled out in 2011-12, the ‘Knowledge Connectivity Programme’ supported by MARG Karaikal Port has benefited about 20,000 farmers, fishermen and women entrepreneurs of self-help groups in 34 villages by providing relevant inputs through advisories over mobile phone, helpline and phone-in facilities
- The second phase of the project will see the benefits of leveraging mobile phone penetration spread to a larger number of beneficiaries and the launch of a community FM station to disseminate information to fishermen who have found that they are unable to receive inputs on their phones once they enter the deep seas beyond 12 nautical miles.

- Concerned over the fact that many schemes have been accounted under general flagship schemes like the National Rural Health Mission and Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan that don’t target SCs and STs specifically and have widened the gap of inequality, the National Coalition on Special Component Plan (SCP) and Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP) have demanded a legislation that will check the anomalies.

- Panel formed to study 13th amendment act
- Amid a raging debate on the 13th Amendment to Sri Lanka’s constitution, a Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) has been formed to study and suggest possible changes to the landmark amendment that created a provincial council system within the unitary state based on a 1987 agreement with India
- Parliament Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa on Friday appointed Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) veteran and senior Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva as chairman of the committee, which has 19 members, all drawn from the SLFP-led United People’s Freedom Alliance, for now.

- Barack Obama will unveil a national climate change plan on Tuesday, offering the first real glimpse of how he intends to make good on one of the most stirring promises of his inaugural address.
- The goals he will outline in his speech at Georgetown University will be equally ambitious, encompassing “a national plan to reduce carbon pollution, prepare our country for the impacts of climate change, and lead global efforts to fight it”,
