  • Award for smart solid waste management
    • An award for best practices in solid waste management has been instituted by the Bangalore Chamber of Industry and Commerce (BCIC) for its member companies
  • Latin American bloc for working closely with BRICS
    • A 33-nation bloc of American countries has expressed the desire to open communications with the five-country BRICS (Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa)
    • India has the distinction of being the first dialogue partner of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), followed by China. Formed in late 2011, CELAC groups together all states in the Americas, barring the United States and Canada.
    • In August last year, Chile, pro-tem Chairman of CELAC, along with Cuba and Venezuela, had held talks here with the then External Affairs Minister, S.M. Krishna, for a “strategic alliance” that would include annual meetings, working together in regional organisations, and increasing commercial exchange.
    • As the Cuban Foreign Minister pointed out, CELAC was planning its next engagement with India for September on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. Though CELAC had kept out the U.S. and one of its major demands was to end the half-century-old American economic embargo on Cuba, its members include nations being led by parties with different ideologies — from a conservative Chile to a vehemently anti-America Cuba along with several countries following middle-of-the-road policies as well
  • Centre's guide to drive home safely
    • A worrying increase in the number of road accidents that result in disabilities and deaths has set alarm bells ringing and the Union Urban Development Ministry has asked all States to consider enforcing a ‘driving guide’, a compendium that will give learners access to best driving practices.
    • The Ministry, which has set a five-year target for reversing the accident growth rate to negative, has pointed out that there is no document available for drivers to learn techniques of safe driving in India unlike in developed countries. Urging the State governments to consider making use of the manual compulsory for learners, it says the guide is based on “documents from Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United Kingdom.
  • Zoo authorities signs MOU with Nepal
    • To ensure the well-being of animals in captivity and to keep its staff in tune with the latest in the field of animal management, the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) – which is in-charge of complementing the national effort in wildlife conservation – on Monday signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Trust for Nature Conservation, Nepal.
    • As per this three-year agreement with Nepal, we will work towards capacity building, exchanging scientific information on in-captivity breeding/conservation, exchange of animals and staff exchange programme
    • He said the Authority has similar tie-ups with Singapore and Germany and is in the process of entering into collaboration with the National Primate Centre, California.
  • Central varsities to be set up instead of minority ones
    • The Union Ministry of Minority Affairs, which initially proposed to set up universities for minorities, will now set up six Central universities in “areas predominantly inhabited by minorities” across the country, including one in Srirangapatna in Karnataka.
    • The decision to establish the six universities comes in the wake of a recommendation made by a committee of experts headed by Sukhadeo Thorat to set up the universities in “areas predominantly inhabited by minority population so that more and more youth from minority communities can join the higher educational streams”
    • Meanwhile, sources in the expert committee told The Hindu that the proposal to establish minority universities, as originally proposed by the Ministry of Minority Affairs, was not legally feasible and referred to cases pending before the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court challenging the minority institution tag given to Aligarh Muslim University and Jamia Millia Islamia University

    • India’s submarine Sindhurakshak received help from the Egyptian Navy when it encountered extreme bad weather and rough sea on its way back home after mid-life upgrade in Russia.

  • Yemen accused of breaching mine ban treaty
    • Yemen was accused before the U.N. on Monday of using anti-personnel mines near its capital, even though it has signed a convention that bans all such weapons.
    • Members of the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention, meeting at the U.N. in Geneva this week, demanded explanation following charges from Human Rights Watch (HRW) and others that Yemen’s Republican Guards had laid anti-personnel mines near ana’a in 2011
