HEADLINES

NATIONAL NEWS
  • India test fires interceptor missile
    • India moved closer to the deployment of the fledgling, home-grown Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) system on Friday when an interceptor missile achieved a direct hit and destroyed an incoming target missile at an altitude of 15 km over the Bay of Bengal;
    • Only 4 countries in the world now have this capability. For the testing, one of India's Pritvi missiles was launched as the attacking missile from Chandipur, Odissa, and the interceptor, AAD-05, was fired from the Wheeler Island. Equipped for the first time with an omni-directional warhead and travelling at a speed of Mach 5-6, the interceptor homed in on the target and smashed it to smithereens five minutes later.
  • Polavaram Project may pose threat to Coringa Mangroves
    • Sustained efforts by government and service organisations to improve green cover at Coringa mangroves on the city outskirts seem to have yielded results with the extent going up by 2,481.91 hectares in the last 25 years;
    • However, there is a threat to the mangroves, the second biggest in India after the Sundarbans in West Bengal, from the Polavaram project. The importance of Coringa mangroves in protecting the mainland from natural calamities came to light during the massive cyclone of 1996. The Govt has imposed a ban on cutting trees in the area and the communities in the surrounding areas have been also involved in increasing the mangrove cover.
