NATIONAL NEWS
- 13 water troughs to be set up in 6 forest ranges
- The Forest Dept will soon be setting up 13 water troughs closer to man-animal conflict zones, 694 sq km of forests in Coimbatore Division, spread over six ranges, to prevent the straying of wild elephants and animals into human habitations in search of water;
- Elephants and wildlife generally wander out of the reserve forests in search of food and water or due to congestion in their migratory route. The department has already initiated works on the restoration of animal corridors;
- The water troughs will be set up to provide relief to the elephants until the onset of the south west monsoon.
- Measles and neonatal tetanus are the next targets after polio
- Emboldened by the remarkable success achieved in its drive against polio, the government will now focus on elimination of measles and neonatal tetanus in the country. Thousands of children die of these two diseases in India every year;
- India had declared 2012 as the year of intensification of routine immunisation.
- Jairam Ramesh says no NGO pressure on him for ban on Bt Brinjal
- Union Minister for Rural Development and former Environment Minister, Jairam Ramesh on Sunday said no NGO influenced his decision to put a moratorium on Bt Brinjal;
- This statement from the former Environment Minister comes against the backdrop of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh raising questions about the role of foreign funded NGOs in blocking use of genetic engineering.
INTERNATIONAL NEWS
- ICANN plans second round of domain name expansion
- The second round of expansion of the Internet top-level domain name regime is on the anvil. The domain name is the concluding part of the web address that follows the dot, like .com or .org. The first round, initiated in January, is in progress now;
- International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers has started receiving applications for the first round from January 12, and the process will continue till April 12. Thereafter, the initial evaluation process itself will be completed only towards the year-end;
- Thus, on the cards in the coming months is a sustained expansion of the generic top-level domain name regime (gTLD), which is now restricted to a handful of gTLDs like .com or .org, and many country code domains like .in for India or .uk for the United Kingdom.
