  • World's Oldest locomotive on heritage run
    • The EIR 21, world's oldest locomotive, an 157 year old steam engine chugged away from Chennai Egmore.
    • The EIR 21 hails from the stable of Kitson Thompson and Hewitson Leeds in the United Kingdom.
    • After coming to India by shipment she served the erstwhile East Indian Railway till 1909 before turning an exhibit in Jamalpur and Howrah for over 100 years.
    • As part of technology upgrades to the EIR 21 this year, a remote-controlled rotational camera was installed in the loco engine to capture the view from the cabin
  • Environmental historian and political commentator Mahesh Rengarajan has been formally selected as the director of Nehru memorial museum and library one of India's top centre's for research on modern Indian history.
INTERNATIONAL
  • South Sudan close down oil wells fearing theft of oil by sudan
    • The country had shut down more than 900 oil wells after accusing neighbouring Sudan of stealing its oil.
    • The shutdown would have a big impact on the new nation, which relies heavily on oil revenues.
    • All of South Sudan's oil runs through Sudan's pipelines to Port Sudan for export.
    • In the mean time South Sudan and Kenya signed a memorandum of understanding to build a pipeline from South Sudan's oil fields south to Lamu, on the northern Kenyan coast, where a new port is planned.
    • S. Sudan broke away from Sudan last July . But the two new neighbours never agreed on the transit fees that South Sudan should pay Sudan.
  • India – Srilanka bilateral trade
    • Trade between India and Sri Lanka surged by more than 70 per cent in 2011 over the previous year, touching an all-time high of $5 billion.
    • Indian Railways would launch a special train, ‘Damba Diwa Vandana,' to take Sri Lankan pilgrims from Chennai to all major Buddhist sites in India.
