HEADLINES

  • Oil companies want to increase pterol prices by 1.50 Rs/-. Diesel, Kerosene prices may also go up.
NATIONAL NEWS
  • Pakistan grants Most favoured Nation (MFN) status to India.
    • Pakistan maintained that granting MFN does not dilute its stand on Kashmir issue.
    • India had granted Pakistan MFN status and the WTO norms mandate that Islamabad reciporcate.
    • Both the countries are in the process of dismantling the Non Tariff Barriers(NTB)
    • Both the countries had earlier granted the status to each other after ratifying the General Agreement on Trades and Tariff(GATT) from 1948 to 1965.
  • Grievance redress bill to complement the Lokpal bill.
    • A citizens right to public grievance bill is to be complemented with the Lokpal bill.
    • The Grievance bill would address the grievance related to public services delivery that affected the common man and that would not be addressed by the Lokpal
    • This bill will cover the panchayats, the Government, the public sector units and even the police.
    • The law once enacted will make sure the citizen's grievances are addressed in a time bound manner.
    • It would look in to complaints of violation of citizen's charter, which would be formulated by each department, identify liabilities of public servants in case of default and impose penalties for failure to deliver services or redress grievances in a time bound manner.
    • The bill could be enacted as a central legislature under the concurrent list and cover the central schemes and central government departments. It would also provide a platform to states to make a grievances redressal mechanism for states schemes and departments.
  • Cannes hosting summit of the world's largest 19 economies and the EU.
    • The carefully planned agenda deals with agriculture, price volatility, development and global governance.
    • The Greek crisis looks to hijack the entire agenda, with the Greek prime minister prefering to have a referendum before accepting the EU bail out plan.
    • Prime minister Manmohan Singh is representing India and is keen on stressing the importance of having a stable economical environment for developing countries like India.
  • Uttrakand Lokhayukta on the lines of Lokpal.
    • Team Anna Lauded the Uttrakand government for passing the Lokpal bill covering the chief minister, the ministers, all bureacracy, lower judiciary and citizen's charter for time bound implementation of government services.
  • Setback to the 44 deemed universities.
    • The centre has informed the supreme court that it had no ground to interfere with the conclusions of the committee's report
    • The centre had appointed a three man committee to look in to the report which had faulted the deemed universities. All the universities presented the case separately.
    • The committee has come to the conclusion at the end of the review that there is no ground to interfere with the Tandon committee's report.
  • India welcomes Nepal's accord.
  • Reaching out to the young of J&K's youth at Delhi's doorstep
    • In a fresh initiative a group of freshly employed youth along with their university teachers are visiting the Government and listening to how it functions
    • This initiative was taken after Rahul Gandhi's visit.
    • The ministry of rural development had initiated the scheme "Himayat" to provide jobs and skill based training to more than one lakh drop outs.
    • The home ministry has also drawn up a plan “Uddan” to provide entry level jobs to 40000 graduates and post graduates in the next five years.
  • For LeT, India is the main target – US congress
    • This assessment contained in the report to congress on US – India security cooperation and was accompanied by strong arguments made in favour of India – US relationships.
    • Key among them was the suggestion that US will share top of the line technology with India.
INTERNATIONAL NEWS

  • Xinjiang keen on reviving historic trade ties with India.
    • The regional government of China's far western Xinjiang region is keen to revive the frontier trade with India that once flourished.
    • The governor of the region Nur Bekri is visiting India to promote the trade ties
    • They are also courting Indian involvement in the plans to develop a special economic zone in the border town of Kashgar, which China has finally accepted as the bordering town of India and China rather than China – Pakistan.
    • Mr. Bekri's visit is a part of the Indian initiative to revive these forgotten regions once rarely recognised as neighbourhood India.
  • India seeks to end external interference in Afganistan
    • Going beyond the silk road vision, India has proposed economically linking central asia with South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation(SAARC)
    • India promised the neighbours and near neighbours will be able to assist Afganistan once the NATO- ISAF prepared to draw down its combat role.
    • India is also planning substantial investment in Afganistan, with Indian companies leading the bid for Hajigak iron ore deposits.
    • But, India also stressed the need for an end to the external influence for any proper development in the areas of good governance and development.

  • India ranked 134th in Human development index
    • The HDI is a measure for assessing long term progress in the three basic dimensions of human development: a long healthy life, access to knowledge and a decent standard of living.

    • Five Indian authors have been listed in the Man Asian Prize long list. They are Amitav Ghosh(River of smoke), Tarun Tejpal(The valley of masks),Jahnavi Barua (Rebirth), Anuradha Roy (The folded earth), and Rahul bhattacharya( The sly company of people who care).
