  • Rogue Gene behind diabetes affecting infants
    • Scientists have found out that a rogue gene is responsible for diabetes that affects infants
    • NDM(Neonatal Diabetes Mellitus) is a rare form of diabetes which happens in infants and is found to occur due to single gene defect.
    • The other forms of diabetes are due to the involvement of multiple genes.
  • Affinity test no sole criteria to reject ST claim : Supreme court
    • The Supreme Court, while laying down broad parameters for claiming Scheduled Tribe status, has held that in dealing with documentary evidence greater reliance may be placed on pre-Independence documents which furnish a higher degree of probative value to the declaration of status of a caste than on post-Independence papers.
    • Supreme court says with migration modernisation and contact with other communities, the ST may have developed new traits which may not essentially match with the traditional characteristics of the tribe. Hence affinity test may not be regarded as the litmus test for establishing the links with the tribe.
  • Solar system had a fifth giant planet?
    • Astronomers claim to have found evidence which suggests that the solar system might have a fifth giant planet, which was mysteriously knocked out into deep space.
    • By their calculations, it only had a 2.5 per cent chance of reaching its current population and orbital layout with four giants, but was 10 times more likely to have developed to its present state if there was a fifth monster body in the mix.
  • Cultural heritage young leadership programme.
    • In a bid to develop cultural awareness among the less privileged school children the cultrue ministry will launch the culture heritage young leadership programme.
    • The aim is to kindle a love for the country's rich heritage, support visits to monuments, and museums and distribute audio visual materials to schools in poorer areas.

    • Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Anand Sharma has said that the Indian economy has been a stabilising force even as the world grapples with economic crisis.
    • However the minister said In difficult times, the tendency is to look inwards, to have protective measures, this is something the G-20 must reassure the world that it will not happen.”
  • Galle dialogue on maritime threats
    • Senior Naval officials from India, Pakistan and a top defence official from the United States are among the participants at the Galle Dialogue, a strategic initiative aimed at discussing emerging maritime threats in the Indian Ocean region.
