NATIONAL NEWS
  • Save Sharmila Solidarity Campaign launched against the AFSPA
    • Support for the Manipuri civil rights activist, Irom Sharmila, who has been on fast for the past 11 years demanding the repeal of the AFSPA, poured in on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti;
    • The campaign is scheduled to culminate on the International Human Rights day (December 10) when leading social activists will join the campaign;
    • The campaign has laid down four basic demands: (i) initiate a dialogue with Sharmila; (ii) send an all party delegation for talks; (iii) send members from the National Commission for Women to assess her condition; and (iv) depute a special team of doctors from Delhi to examine her condition.
  • Solution for real time interception of Blackberry services will put an end to standoff with Govt
    • After seeking extensions for over a year, the canadian company, Research In Motion has finally come up with a plan for the real-time interception of Blackberry Messenger and Enterprise services;
    • The solution is being tested by the Dept of Telecommunication and if it withstands scrutiny then it is likely that the Govt will ask other smartphone makers to come up with a similar solution.
INTERNATIONAL NEWS
  • NASA's new and powerful flying telescope in search of distant stars
    • The Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) is a new telescope which is being used to study the atmosphere of planets and formation of stars;
    • Unlike other telescopes of NASA which are in space, SOFIA will be mounted on a Boeing 747 so that researchers can adjust and upgrade the instruments everyday when the plane lands. This method has taken importance with no more shuttle launches being planned in the near future.
